Step into history in Guilderland Center
The historic Mynderse-Frederick House at 451 Route 146 in Guilderland Center will hold an open house on Saturday, June 17. The event, from 1 to 4 p.m., will include tours of the award-winning gardens and the building’s interior, which will be decorated with flower arrangements.
Photos of Guilderland’s cobblestone buildings will also be displayed at the open house, with an emphasis on Guilderland Center’s one-room cobblestone schoolhouse. This schoolhouse, which stands just a few doors down from the Mynderse-Frederick House, was the subject of much discussion at school-board meetings this year. Eventually, the board allocated $35,000 in the 2017-18 budget to keep the old schoolhouse from further deterioration.
A special guest at the open house will be a historical society member who actually attended the cobblestone schoolhouse.
Although visitors cannot enter the schoolhouse at present because of safety issues, they will be welcome to view the outside.
Built in 1802 by Nicholas Mynderse, the Mynderse-Frederick House was one of Guilderland’s early taverns. After Mynderse’s death in the 1820s, it was bought by members of the Frederick family — descendants of an early settler of Guilderland, who occupied it until 1940. It was donated to the town for use as a museum and the headquarters of the town’s historical society in 1974.
The open house is sponsored jointly by the Guilderland Garden Club and the Guilderland Historical Society. Members of each group will be on hand to answer any questions. The event is part of the NYS Path Through History Weekend.
It is also a chance to meet Guilderland’s new historian, Ann Wemple-Person, who will attend from 1 to 3 p.m.
Refreshments will be served by garden club members. For information or directions, call 518-861-8582.
