We learn to balance academics with extracurriculars

To the Editor:
Each season Coach Dennis reminds our golf team: You are students first, athletes second.

He and many other Berne-Knox-Westerlo coaches help student-athletes develop skills necessary for life such as sportsmanship, perseverance, integrity, patience, focus, and teamwork. We learn to balance academics with extracurriculars.

I love that golf is a sport that can be enjoyed by the whole family. My brother and two of my cousins play on the BKW team, along with several other sibling sets.

The interest in golf is growing exponentially. This afternoon, we had 18 sixth-grade students join us on our practice green behind the school.

While BKW has had a co-ed golf program for decades, last year was the first time in BKW history that the team had enough girls to field a girls’ team.

For many, playing any sport outside of school is not an option because it is cost-prohibitive. Offering programs like golf, and other sports and activities at school, gives everyone a chance to develop skills that will carry over into academics and their future.

We hope that you vote in favor of the school budget to keep BKW Golf swinging!
