Help the Altamont Fair celebrate its 125th year
To the Editor:
On August 6, 1892 a public meeting was held in Altamont. During this meeting, a committee was formed and tasked with investigating the possibility of creating an agriculture society for the purpose of establishing grounds and holding fairs.
With the Altamont Fair less than 80 days away, the 125th Celebration Committee has been busy gathering, sorting, and preserving photos and memorabilia all devoted to sharing this important story.
Over the next few months, you can visit Altamont, Guilderland, and Voorheesville libraries to see Altamont Fair exhibits. In addition, there are festivities and multiple exhibits planned for Altamont Fair Week to showcase 125 years. The fair has also commissioned Don Rittner, a local historian, to write a book documenting the Altamont Fair story.
We are looking for sponsors to support these efforts to capture and preserve Altamont Fair history for years to come. Would you like to get involved? Would you like to volunteer to work with the committee? Do you have an Altamont Fair story to share? Some memorabilia we can showcase? Call the fair office at (518) 861-6661 to speak with Bev Filkins, chairwoman of the 125th Celebration Committee. And be sure to visit us during the Altamont Fair, Aug. 15 to 20!
