It feels like we are a community of volunteers

To the Editor:
I love our village so much. Last weekend showcased, through the Library Gala and the Memorial Day Parade, not only our vast community spirit, but also the incredible support for the institutions and individuals who mean so much to us.

It feels like we are a community of volunteers — when I think of the hours of devotion that go into these events, as well those of Altamont Community Tradition, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the rescue squad, the fire department, the local churches, the boys and girls clubs, and many, many others.

And then, of course, are the village staff and representatives who are always there to support our volunteers. We are a pretty special place.

I especially want to praise the library board, which each year honors some of our outstanding community volunteers or groups for their selfless labors on behalf of the village. This year, for those who were not able to attend the gala, there were four honorees:

— Ronnie and Al D’Alauro for enhancing and maintaining the beautiful greenery surrounding the Library;

— Keith Lee for his tireless work on Schilling Park, Orsini Park, and the gardens leading to Bozenkill Park;

— Our Department of Public Works, which has always been more than willing to help support the various activities and events which take place throughout the Village; and

— John Sands.

I want to give a special shout-out to John and his family, for those many families and friends who are new to Altamont. Since the 1980s, John and his children have donated and hung all the flower baskets in the summer, and all the evergreen swag decorations in the winter that you see displayed on the telephone poles throughout the village center, along with various flower planters lining the walks.

When I learned of this, I was in awe of the magnitude and generosity of this contribution, truly a labor of love for one’s hometown. A fond Altamont memory will always be watching John’s sons, Max and Alex (and maybe Kendra, too?), on the back of his truck helping their dad hang each and every planter or swag around the village.

Thank you, John, and thank you to all the volunteers who enrich our community in so many ways.  We are so much better for your efforts. And Robbie, you were the perfect Grand Marshal for the parade!
