Learn how feed sacks became dresses, curtains, and quilts
To the Editor:
Attention history buffs and quilt enthusiasts: Kris Driessen will be speaking about feed sacks and their use during the Depression as fabric for making dresses, curtains, and quilts at the June 7 meeting of the Knox Historical Society at the Knox Town Hall at 7 p.m.
Long-time readers of The Altamont Enterprise may remember an article that appeared in the July 31 , 2003 edition of The Enterprise. In that article, Nickie Barber’s brother reminisced about his childhood duty of being entrusted with the job of purchasing particular colors and prints of the chicken feed-sack bags so that his sisters could repurpose the bags into beautiful clothing and household items.
Nickie was one of the Knox Reformed Church Ladies’ Aid quilters. The photo shows the prize-winning feed-sack quilt that Nickie passed on to her granddaughter.
The 2016 “Artistic Quilts and Needlework of Knox and Berne Show,” sponsored by the historical societies of Knox and Berne, will take place on Sunday, July 17, at the Knox Town Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Hope to see you at the Feedsack Program on June 7.
