Memorial Day: Honoring and remembering those who paid with their lives for our freedom

To the Editor:

Each year since the Civil War, our nation has set aside a day in spring to honor and remember those who paid with their lives for our freedom.

In 1873, New York became the first state to observe May 30 as Memorial Day. By 18990, all Northern states had followed New York’s lead.

Around the world today, about 3 million of America’s military lay dead beneath the earth, the snow, and the sea, their passing marked by a stone, a cross, or rippling waves.

Last Sunday, the Village of Altamont had a special service of remembrance in the village park. This happens each Memorial Day and is planned by our American Legion and VFW Posts.

Earlier that morning, two Legion Riders, Patty and Bruce, came to the Home Front Cafe to ask me to attend the ceremony. I explained that I have difficulty walking, but they assured me they would get me there and they did. Along came Tim McIntyre a handsome veteran of the United States Marines, who escorted me to the podium.

An inspiring program was given by Patty, Bruce,k Chaplain Brumley, and VFW Commander Tim Haggerty. At this time a beautiful American Flag was presented to me for the Home Front Cafe in recognition of our veterans. We were much honored. It was very moving, and Jack and I sincerely thank you. You are the Home Front — you are the reason we are here! To all who participated in the program thank you. We appreciate and love you!
