Guilderland’s Ed Frank, pictured with his wife, Shirley, received national recognition for his lifetime advocacy of safe driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration presented Frank with its public service award on May 19. Frank founded the Choices 301 program to teach especially youth about the dangers of driving drunk or drugged.

To the Editor:

Something really special took place at a recent Albany press conference to promote awareness for safe driving. All the elected officials there paused for a moment to honor Guilderland’s own Ed Frank for his lifetime dedication to the cause of making smart choices while driving.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration presented Ed with its public-service award to honor his achievement. This national recognition for our local hero was so well deserved.

Ed, and his wife, Shirley, have been relentless advocates for building awareness and promoting education on the hazards of dangerous and distracted driving. Ed and Shirley opened the Beacon of Hope Care Center in Altamont and that mission continues to this day.

Their work has undoubtedly saved lives. It’s wonderful to see that recognition of this vital work stretches all the way to Washington!
