APPEAL TO MEN OF NEW YORK STATE

“The year 1917 has been one of greatest progress for the cause of Woman Suffrage,” says Mrs. Norman Whitehouse, chairman of Suffrage Party of New York State, in an open letter just issued to the voters of New York State.

“Since January, the following States have given Presidential Suffrage to women: Ohio, Indiana, North Dakota, Michigan, Nebraska and Rhode Island. Also Arkansas, have given the vote to women in all primary elections.

“The war has brought a realization of women’s responsibility to Government.

“On November 6, 1917 New York State will vote on a Woman Suffrage Amendment.”

BARNS DESTROYED BY FIRE.

Fire which started at about 7:30 o’clock Tuesday evening completely destroyed three barns and a wagon house on the farm of William H. Anthony at Parker’s Corners. When discovered the blaze had already gained considerable headway and was beyond control. The buildings, with their contents, two horses, one cow, several pigs and chickens, machinery, tools, and a large amount of hay and grain, are a total loss. A great effort was made to save the livestock but to no avail.

Mr. Anthony’s house was saved from destruction by neighbors who gathered in large numbers, by demolishing two other smaller buildings which stood between the burning barns and the residence. The lurid glare caused by the fire attracted a large crowd of people from Schenectady, Dunnsville, Altamont, Giffords and other places.

Investigation after the fire failed to determine the cause. Mr. Anthony carried a small insurance in the Guilderland Town Insurance company.

VILLAGE NOTES.

— Unseasonably cold weather still prevails in this section of the country. In a few places the temperature was so low Wednesday night that a slight film of ice formed. The unfavorable weather conditions are greatly hindering the farmers in the planting of crops.

— The Altamont High school baseball team motored to Hartwick seminary last Saturday for a game with the seminary team. Our boys were completely outclasses and suffered a 12 to 0 defeat. The Hartwick players are all older than the High school boys, and in addition they were accustomed to playing on their diamond, which is positively one of the worst we have ever seen. Saturday’s defeat should not dishearten the home team, but encourage them to greater efforts.

GUILDERLAND CENTER.

“Anti-Cigarette Day” was observed last Sunday in the Sunday schools of the village.
