Visit the Knox Museum to learn more about Lt. Barckley, Civil War hero from Knox

To the Editor:

I read, with great interest, the excellent article by Mary Ellen Johnson concerning Memorial Day (Decoration Day — the day to decorate the graves of the Civil War dead).

I invite anyone who would like to know more about Lieutenant Michael Barckley, the Knox resident after whom the Altamont Grand army of the Republic Post was named, to visit the Saddlemire Homestead (home of the Knox Museum) on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The officer’s sword presented to him by the townspeople of Knox is on display upstairs in the Patriot’s Room, along with copies of letters he sent home during the war.

The Saddlemire Homestead will also be open on Saturday, June 16, from noon to 2 p.m. as part of New York State Path Through History weekend, and again on Sunday, July 1, from noon to 2 p.m. as part of the Pucker Street Fair.

For more information, or to take a virtual tour, visit our website at http://www.knoxhistoricalsociety.org/.  The Saddlemire Homestead is located at 2190 Berne-Altamont Road (Route 156) in the heart of Knox.
