Come together in gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy

To the Editor:

As is our Hilltown community tradition, the Kiwanis Club of the Helderbergs will be organizing this year’s Memorial Day Parade with marching units, floats, motorized equipment, and more. At 10 a.m. on Monday, May 26, the parade will step off on Route 443 outside Berne and proceed to the Berne-Knox-Westerlo campus for a memorial ceremony.

Everyone is welcome to set up lawn chairs along the parade route and plan to attend the ceremony at the school.

The BKW Marching Band will participate in the parade and play the national anthem and taps. Kiwanis members and helpers will hand out small flags for parade-goers to wave.

Although Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for our fallen heroes, Kiwanis would also like to take the opportunity to publicly recognize and thank our living service members and veterans for their commitments to protecting our freedoms.

Kiwanis members will be asking for the name and service branch of anyone who would like to be honored at the ceremony by having their name read. Or that information may be emailed to one of us in advance: alpokorny@nycap.rr.com or pegc@nycap.rr.com

We are looking forward to this opportunity for the community to come together in gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy, thanks to the sacrifices of the heroes we will be honoring.
