State police charge Westerlo man with DWI after multi-vehicle crash

WESTERLO — Andrew R. Gibson, 42, of Westerlo was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated after a multi-vehicle crash on Route 401 in Westerlo on Sunday that caused critical injuries, according to a release from the New York State Police.

According to the state police, events unfolded this way: Gibson, traveling north on Route 401 in a 2012 Audi A6, passed a vehicle in a no-passing zone as they approached a curve in the road. Gibson failed to negotiate the curve and entered the southbound lane, sideswiping 56-year-old Donald Utter of Rensselaerville who was riding south on a 2000 Harley Davidson motorcycle. Gibson then collided head-on with 55-year-old Lisa Sperry of Berne who was driving a 2005 Chrysler Town and Country and was southbound behind Utter.

“Lisa Sperry was critically injured in the crash,” the release said. “Her passengers, 15-year-old Cade Sperry and 18-year-old Calvin Sperry, both of Berne, were seriously injured. Gibson’s passenger, 31-year-old Lauren E. Carey of Westerlo, was also seriously injured.

“Donald Utter and Andrew Gibson sustained non-life-threatening injuries. All injured parties were taken to Albany Medical Center for treatment.”

Gibson is scheduled to appear in Westerlo Town Court on June 16.

Additional charges are pending as state police continue their investigation of the crash.

State police were assisted by the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, the Albany County District Attorney’s Office, the Westerlo Volunteer Fire Company, and LifeNet.
