New building for historic Mount Pleasant Cemetery

To the Editor:

The Mount Pleasant Cemetery in New Salem has a new utility building.

The building was made possible with a $4,000 grant from the Albany County Legislature and the assistance of Classic Sheds owner and New Scotland resident, Tom Ensslin. The New Scotland Highway Department prepared the crushed-stone base.

Over the years, the former concrete-block building had become unsafe, due to constant freezing and thawing of the foundation.

Mount Pleasant Cemetery in New Salem was established in March 1864 and has a number of Civil War soldiers buried on the 15-acre site. The New Scotland Kiwanis Club has spent countless hours of community service repairing and raising some 140 gravestones over the last 15 years.
