More safety features of quiet zones

To the Editor:

I would like to add a few more comments to my Letter to the Editor of last week that highlighted the safety features of the quiet zone [“Quiet zone would make Voorheesville railroad crossings safer,” The Altamont Enterprise, May 8, 2025].

All quiet zones have:

— 1. Signage posted on either side of the crossing that alerts motorists and pedestrians that the train horn will not sound at the crossing;

— 2. Flashing lights and bells that are triggered each time the gates are lowered; and

— 3. Rules for sounding the horn — the locomotive engineer may at any time sound the horn if there are vehicles, people, or animals on the tracks; the engineer must sound the horn if there is a work crew on the track.
