Voorheesville Memorial Day Parade Celebrates the American Legion’s 100th Anniversary
To the Editor:
The Voorheesville American Legion Post 1493 will be hosting the annual Memorial Day parade on saturday, May 25, at 10 a.m., honoring those who gave all for our freedom.
The theme for this year’s parade is “Celebrating the American Legion’s 100th jAnniversary.” The American Legion was founded in March 1919, by United States World War I military personnel stationed in Paris, France.
This year’s grand marshall of our parade will be John Livingston, a long-time resident of the town of New Scotland and U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. John enlisted in 1944 at the age of 17, and saw action in the South Pacific Theater, as a gunner’s mate while stationed in New Guinea, the Philippines, and Okinawa.
The parade will start from Circle Drive, heading down Maple Avenue and ending at the Voorheesville American Legion Post. a memorial ceremony will then be held in the Jim Nichols Park followed by music and refreshments served until 3 p.m.
Runners are invited to attend the annual Voorheesville Road Races, of varied distances, after the ceremonies. There will also be a fireworks display, sponsored by the Jim Nichols Memorial Fund at 9 p.m.
Any group not already contacted that wishes to march in the parade should call the Legion at 518-765-4712, after 4 p.m.
We hope to see you all at the 100th Anniversary Celebration
