Mark Von Haugg
KNOX — Mark Von Haugg worked in his career at trouble-shooting technology, but he had his domestic lifestyle figured out at a young age.
Mark Benedict Von Haugg died peacefully at his home in Knox on May 9, 2015. He was 74.
Mr. Von Haugg was born on Feb. 19, 1941 in Albany to Lothar and Bertha (née Hasse) Von Haugg.
He grew up on Cole Hill on a farm with his parents and four siblings — Isolde, Diana, Tristan, and Richard.
He graduated from Berne-Knox-Westerlo Central School in 1960 and married Patricia Komjathy that same year. They had known each other since kindergarten.
“He was somebody you could depend on,” his wife said. “He had his way of showing how he cared about people but he wasn’t a gushing type person.” She added, “He would buy roses, or buy flowers, not necessarily give them to you and make a big to-do about it, just kind of bring them home and set them down someplace.”
He then joined the Air Force in 1960 as an Aircraft Technician where he was stationed on Long Island. He took a year of college-level classes while stationed at an Air Force base in Suffolk County, his wife said. In 1964, after he was honorably discharged, he and his family eventually settled in the town of Knox where they have remained.
“He was fresh out of school, no desire to go onto continued education,” said Mrs. Von Haugg. “He just decided to join the military, where he did get an education, and where he found his niche in electrical work, which later on led to computer work.”
Mr. Von Haugg worked in the computer division for Honeywell for 20 years. He helped maintain the computers at General Electric and The Boston Globe. He later ran his own business, Von Haugg Associates, in which he installed and serviced pay phones in a 100-mile radius of his home.
He enjoyed being outside, fishing, hunting, hiking, and gardening. And he relished time with his family, and bonded with his daughter as they rode horses together.
He was a country boy, his wife said, and knew he wanted to be in the Hilltowns. In his later years, as his health prevented him from much activity, he spent much of his time indoors on his computer.
“He read everything on the computer, all the news, you know,” his wife said. “From one source to another source, to another source.”
As a young boy on the farm, Mr. Von Haugg and his sister always had horses, his wife said. And so he enjoyed having them for his family, and seeing them graze in the field above their home in Knox. All of the horses the Von Hauggs owned are buried on the property.
Mr. Von Haugg took pleasure in his home and the way his property looked. Mrs. Von Haugg described their house as a country home that looks like a German chalet with a balcony wrapped around, with an expansive lawn.
A barn was built on the property, with horses at the back of the house, in an upper field. And Mr. Von Haugg tended a garden from which the family ate much produce.
“He always loved fresh-picked sweet corn,” Mrs. Von Haugg said. “Nothing that was sitting on the shelf was good enough.”
