Successful suit against Stewart’s would hurt tax base

To the Editor:

This is in response to last week’s Enterprise article pertaining to the reversal of approval of Stewart’s expansion. Every individual has a right to his or her grievances for whatever reason.

In this case however they are asking for something that will only satisfy those with like opinion. I don’t think they realize they will be decreasing Altamont’s commercial tax base, placing the burden on the balance of residential taxpayers, which has already happened many times.

For just a few examples: drugstore, shoe-repair shop, bowling alley, bar and restaurant, two physicians’ offices, hardware store, three different auto service shops, as well as an auto dealership and a truck company, etc.

The tax base these businesses provided are now being paid by existing residents. For what it’s worth, so be it.
