Stewart’s should buy and demolish the Altamont Sunoco

Stewart’s has cut the row of trees in front of the duplex it owns at 107-109 Helderberg Ave., which it plans to demolish in order to build a new shop.

Altamont artist Ed Cowley, the late father of the letter-writer, painted this. The inscription says: “Once to every man and nation/ Comes the moment to decide/ In the strife of truth and falsehood/ For the good or evil side.

To the Editor:

Now that all the trees are down, we all can see what a magnificent building it is.

Honestly, why can’t Stewart’s figure out the right things to do as a preservation good-business citizen?

Buy and demolish the Altamont Sunoco. Buy the adjacent vacant lot no matter what the cost. Start all over with a blank design slate.

Then, design and construct a beautiful, magnificent Stewart’s store with plenty of space all around.  Reroute Prospect Terrace to intersect rationally closer to the railroad tracks. Eliminate a dangerous, idiotic five-way intersection at the bottom of a steep hill!  D.O.T. madness!

The present Stewart’s store can be transformed to a nice asphalt-free green space named, “Porter Park” honoring Porter Bidleman and Marty Porter who “paved the way” for Stewart’s to come to our village.  Replant trees to provide a privacy buffer to the adjacent neighborhood.

All Prospect Terrace residents and businesses would benefit from a safely rerouted intersection with Main Street, especially Village Pizza and Altamont Agway.

Money is not an issue for the Stewart’s corporation. Atone for your Voorheesville past misdeeds! It’s not too late.

Let’s keep Altamont Cumberland Farms-free!
