Altamont parade to honor vets and spotlight businesses

To the Editor:

We would love for the community to be part of our mission to bring back the businesses of Altamont and to celebrate them during these trying times. We want to organize an Altamont parade for Memorial Day weekend to accomplish this.

In addition to this, we want to honor our veterans while bringing the community and its youth closer together. It is important that you know the steps we aim to take to involve the local businesses and execute a memorable parade.

The parade itself will take place on Saturday, May 23, from 10 to 11a.m. The businesses involved and residents of the village will decorate their cars, trucks, or floats prior to the parade. The participants can cater their designs toward three categories: most creative/colorful, most patriotic, and most historical.

Following the parade, an elected panel will vote for the winners of each category who will be rewarded with donated business baskets. Also, during the event, every business that is open will have a special patriotic illuminated symbol on their lawn or in their window.

As businesses begin to open back up, over the next months, they can display this symbol on their property. The goal is to have the village of altamont businesses all lit up! Before the parade itself, we want to get as much visibility for the Altamont businesses as possible.

With this in mind, we are going to provide the opportunity for each business to purchase a promotional package for $50. If any business cannot afford to purchase the package, we will cover it for them. The package will include four communications in The Altamont Enterprise, two of which will be advertisements directly for each business.

The first communication is this letter to the editor. The next two communications will be the advertisements for each business participating in the parade. These ads can include any special services or promotions that each individual business desires, running on Thursdays, May 14 and May 21.

The final communication will take place Thursday, May 28, following the event. This article will announce the winners from the parade contest and a recap of the parade. Additionally, the package will cross-market the businesses on the Altamont Facebook page and come with the special illuminated flag for the business.

We hope this plan will be a success in honoring our veterans and putting local businesses in the spotlight.
