“I love my family, and they love me” is the slogan for Sadie Poole’s poster on strengthening families and preventing child abuse. Her family includes her two siblings and her pets. The 9-year-old Berne-Knox-Westerlo student placed third in Albany County’s Child Abuse Prevention Posters Contest.

BERNE — A 9-year-old Berne-Knox-Westerlo student has placed third in the annual Child Abuse Prevention Posters Contest.

The student, Sadie Poole, had drawn herself and her family to demonstrate the love a family has. The poster includes herself, her brother and sister, her parents, her dog Max, and her cat Pumpkin.

The contest is run by Albany County during April, which is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, in order to raise awareness of the issue.

The other contest winners were Romy Gribulis, a 5-year-old in kindergarten at Boght Hills Elementary School, in first place; and Makyra Kankwah, a 10-year-old in fourth grade at Henry Johnson Charter School, in second place.

This month also saw data from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services indicating that Albany County’s Healthy Families Program had served over 200 families in 2016.

The data indicates that the program provided services to 273 families in the county and conducted 3,889 home visits. According to the data, 95 percent of eligible children were up to date on immunizations by their first birthdays.

“We are proud of the work of our Healthy Families team,” said Gail Geohagen-Pratt, commissioner of Albany County’s Department for Children, Youth and Families, in a release from the county.  “They are a primary prevention resource and play an integral role in the engagement of families and delivery of services.  They are so deserving of this recognition by New York State!”

The data also suggested all eligible children had been assessed for the risk of lead in their homes, connected to a medical provider, and that all eligible families had received referrals for services within six months of enrollment.
