Turn a town wasteland into a rose garden

To the Editor:
Driving past the Guilderland transfer station at least once a day, it strikes me that, if feasible, the former landfill could be planted with hardy arctic rose bushes. It could be called the Guilderland Rose Garden and coordinated by the Guilderland Garden Club and the town’s Parks and Recreation Department.

Residents could contribute a standard amount to buy “Family Flowers.” Perhaps the rose bushes could be obtained at cost as donations from local garden centers.

Families and/or interested organizations could tend the bushes on an assigned schedule. Any extra monies could go for rose maintenance items such as rose dust, fertilizer, and small  pruners.

Starting in July each year and weekly, rose bouquets could be gathered and sold to defray costs. A small seating area could be created behind the maintenance building for residents to enjoy the community effort. Rosarians could advise as to appropriate planting, dead-heading, making bouquets, and pruning.

If feasible, this could transform a former wasteland to something we could enjoy for years to come.  Could this action be pursued by the town board?
