Joseph Carmine Sapienza Sr.

VOORHEESVILLE — Joseph Carmine Sapienza Sr. died peacefully in his home, surrounded by pictures and mementos of his loving family, on Thursday, April 20, 2023. He was 83.

He was born on Feb. 18, 1940, in Yonkers, New York, the loving son of Carmine and Ruth Ackerman Sapienza.

“He proudly served in the United States Navy from 1957 to 1961,” his family wrote in a tribute. “He was most proud of being a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle.

“His door was always open to all for a delicious Sunday brunch (his home fries were legendary) or a plate of macaroni and the most delicious meatballs. In most recent years, he spent his free time watching old movies and TV shows. Some of his favorites included ‘The Honeymooners,’ ‘The Three Stooges,’ ‘The Andy Griffith Show,’ ‘Monk,’ and ‘Bonanza’ to name just a few.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Jane Schreiber Sapienza, and by his children, Ruthanne Sapienza; Joseph Carmine Sapienza and his wife, Katherine; Edwin James Sapienza, and his wife, Amy; and Robert Carmine Sapienza, and his wife, Amy.

He is also survived by his seven loving grandchildren, Teresa Anne and her husband, William Monzidelis II, Collin Joseph Sapienza, Alex Joseph Sapienza, Justin Edwin Sapienza, Ally Marianne Sapienza, Maya Rose Sapienza, and Molly Ann Sapienza; two great-grandsons, William Monzidelis III and Joseph Ralph Monzidelis; his brother, Thomas Sapienza; and many nieces and nephews.

His daughter, Marianne Carmen Sapienza, died before him, as did his parents; and his brothers, Edward and John Sapienza.

Relatives and friends may call at St. Matthew’s Church at 25 Mountainview St. in Voorheesville on Thursday, April 27, from 4 to 7 p.m. The funeral Mass will be held in St. Matthew’s Church at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 28, followed by burial in the Calvary Cemetery in Glenmont.

    He died peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2024, at the blessed age of 93.
