Join us in reading!

This little free library in Unionville is one of three firehouse libraries run by the Onesquethaw Volunteer Fire Company. The others are in Feura Bush and Clarksville.

To the Editor:

The members of the Onesquethaw Volunteer Fire Company would like to invite our community to join us in reading! While March is designated as National Reading Month, every month is a month to motivate Americans of all ages to read every day.

The fire company has little red libraries located at each of our three fire stations — in Clarksville, Feura Bush, and Unionville. We have books for all ages and want to encourage our community members to borrow a book or two and leave a book or two to share with others.

Books available in the libraries include children’s books, young adult books, adult fiction, adult non-fiction books, and recipe books.

Our little libraries began in 2020 with the vision and passion of one of our fire company members, Yasmin Salway. Her mission was to “bring the community together, increase literacy, and build a relationship with the fire company.” We want to continue and honor Yasmin’s vision.

Not only is reading fun, it has many benefits, too, regardless of your age. It’s a key component of education and professional development. It also has immediate and long-lasting health benefits such as increased cognitive function, memory, vocabulary, empathy, and decreased levels of stress.

So, come on community, join us in reading together!
