Nonagenarians Hal and Mary Hughes watch a line of well-wishers parade by their Altamont house on Sunday to celebrate their birthdays.

ALTAMONT — Coronavirus isolation did not stop the children of Mary and Hal Hughes from celebrating their birthdays — 92 and 90 — which are just a week apart.

The couple has lived in Altamont for over 60 years; Mrs. Hughes — the former Mary Rickard — is a native. She has been an active volunteer and a garden club member. Mr. Hugues has served as justice of the peace, judge, and town board member.

They have been married for 67 years.

Daughter Meg Seinberg-Hughes kept the festivities a surprise by communicating through Facebook, which her parents don’t read. On Sunday afternoon, April 19, she had her parents sit on their front porch with her brother and sister.

“If you would like to help us celebrate,” Seinberg-Hughes wrote on Facebook, “come down to 8 Sunset Drive, honk, wave, and wish them well!”

And come they did. Meg’s husband, Mike Seinberg, captured the celebration in pictures.
