We’re now planning for a 2021 parade in Altamont

To the Editor:

Unfortunately, given the growing concerns over COVID-19, the Altamont Memorial Parade Committee has made the difficult decision to cancel this year’s parade.

A grassroots, volunteer organization, this committee has worked hard to collaborate with many village and surrounding groups that gladly stepped up to be a part of the parade, and we hope they will keep their enthusiasm fresh for next year’s event!

We especially want to thank the Altamont Fire Department, which responded “whatever you need!” when asked to take part. Our committee members worked tirelessly in their efforts to put together the best parade we could as we reimagined what was a decades-long tradition in Altamont.

These members include Bob Freeman, Tracy Mayer, Tresa Matulewicz, Jeff Perlee, and Michelle Viola-Straight as well as several others who were willing to work the day of the parade to assure things ran smoothly. We hope you will all be back this fall as we plan ahead.

We do hope that on this Memorial Day, we will all remember to fly the flag and take a moment to remember the heroes who sacrificed so we have the freedom to do so. We look forward to a strong event in 2021 to remember and honor the military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

So save the date: May 23, 2021— we’ll see you there!
