Help take care of your hometown

To the Editor:

I would like to invite the residents of the town of New Scotland to participate in the upcoming Community Cares Days, a cooperative effort of the village of Voorheesville, the New Scotland Kiwanis, and the town of New Scotland, which will be held the weekend of April 28 and 29.

Our Green Clean option focuses on the environment and cleaning up our community roadways and the Vly Creek, and our Neighbors Helping Neighbors program offers the opportunity for residents to assist some of our elderly and disabled neighbors with small home chores or repairs and springtime yard maintenance.

Green Clean focuses on the community taking care of their hometown — with many participating in the cleanup of litter along our roadways. Please be extra attentive on the mornings of April 28 and 29, as more of your friends and neighbors than usual will be out walking the roadways.

As part of Green Clean, we will once again offer drop-off recycling opportunities on Saturday, April 28, from 9 a.m. until noon at the Voorheesville firehouse. The drop-off recycling is open to anyone who would like to take advantage of the chance to clean out some of the following items and dispose of them in a way that will benefit someone else:

— Clothing and linens: Usable items benefit Voorheesville Methodist Church and affiliates;

— Books to benefit Albany Book Project;

— Shoeboxes, small blankets, towels, and washcloths — also collecting canned/wet pet food and cat litter  to be donated to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society;

— Returnable bottles and cans, collected by the fire department’s auxiliary;

— Scrap metal, a fundraiser for Voorheesville Lacrosse; and

— Automotive, lawn and garden, and household batteries, collected by NAPA.

Town of New Scotland residents are also invited to take advantage of a paper-shredding event that the town is hosting on that same Saturday, April 28, from 9 a.m. until noon, also at the Voorheesville firehouse at 12 Altamont Road. Papers will be shredded on-site so you can rest assured that your documents are destroyed appropriately. There will be a six-box limit.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a terrific program that truly brings out one’s sense of community. Our older or disabled residents who find it difficult to continue to maintain their homes and cannot afford to hire help benefit from friends and neighbors lending a helping hand.

We have been asked for assistance by several of your neighbors — most requests involve yard work and window-washing. Extra helpers are always appreciated.

Would you like to join us?  Call Karen at 518-727-5244 for more information on Community Cares Day, Green Clean, or Neighbor Helping Neighbor.
