Three injured Sunday in car crash on Route 155

GUILDERLAND — Sunday morning saw the second serious car crash in a week on Route 155. Both drivers in Sunday’s crash were from Voorheesville, and both were taken to the hospital.

One of the drivers was Joseph Cotazino, 61,  of 5 Robin Dr., who leads the Orchard Park Neighborhood Association, an organization that has donated food to the New Scotland Community Food Pantry at Thanksgiving and adopted a family during the holidays for two decades.

Cotazino’s wife Joy Cotazino said by phone Wednesday that he has undergone surgery and is now beginning recovery. “Hopefully he’ll be able to continue to support the community,” she said.

A spokeswoman at Albany Medical Center that both he and the driver of the other car are currently hospitalized in serious condition.

At about 10:30 a.m., according to the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, a 2004 Buick driven by Gladys Chamberlain, 78, collided head-on with Cotazino’s 2016 Ford Explorer.

The crash on Sunday occurred on the stretch of Route 155 that lies between Wormer Road and Voorheesville Avenue, Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Michael Monteleone told The Enterprise.

According to a witness’s account and evidence at the scene, investigators say, Chamberlain was headed south when she crossed over into the northbound lane and struck Cotazino’s Explorer, which was traveling north.

Cotazino and his wife were both brought to Albany Medical Center for injuries they sustained in the crash. Joy Cotazino told The Enterprise on Wednesday that she was just “bruised up.”

Chamberlain was extricated from her car by the Slingerlands and Westmere fire departments and was taken to Albany Medical Center with serious injuries. Alcohol is not believed to be a factor, police say.

Chamberlain may well have had a medical event of some kind prior to the crash, said Captain James Goss of the Albany County Sheriff’s Office. She was  previously in critical condition, he said, and police had not been able to interview her.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Assisting at the scene were the Albany County Sheriff’s Office, the Albany County Sheriff’s Emergency Medical Services, Western Turnpike Rescue Squad, Voorheesville Ambulance, Helderberg Ambulance, Onesquethaw Ambulance, Slingerlands Fire Department, New Salem Fire Department, Onesquethaw Fire Department, Guilderland Paramedics, and Guilderland Police Department.

This crash comes six days after one that claimed the life of mental-health therapist  Ashley Taheri, age 55, also on State Farm Road, in Guilderland, between Wormer Road and Griffin Laboratory. In that earlier crash, Taheri lost control of her car and spun into oncoming traffic in an early spring snowfall.

Roads were clear and there was no precipitation on Sunday when Chamberlain lost control and veered across the road.
