GUILDERLAND — Christopher G. Goutos, DDS, a trusted Guilderland dentist and devoted father, “peacefully entered into eternal life on April 2, 2025,” his family wrote in a tribute. He was 93.

He was born in Schenectady on Oct. 5, 1931 to the late Theodore and Zografia Goutos, who were immigrants from Greece. His beloved wife of 68 years, Anita, died before him, as did his brother, Peter G. Goutos, of Scotia.

Dr. Goutos grew up in Schenectady and graduated from the former Mont Pleasant High School. He received his bachelor of science degree from Siena College and went on to earn his doctor of dental surgery degree from the Georgetown University School of Dentistry.

During the Korean War, he served in the United States Army, where he was a dental technician from 1952 to 1954. He continued his service in the U.S. Army Reserve until 1960.

Dr. Goutos practiced dentistry in Guilderland for 28 years. He opened his practice in 1960 and had a home office on Carman Road. There, he and his wife, Anita, raised a family of four kids, while both were busy running the office.

One of their sons, Greg, recalls that, when he and his siblings were young, they would get off the bus after school and would then quietly enter the office through the waiting room.

“We would say hi to Mom, who was the receptionist in later years, while Dad was usually busy with patients,” Greg Goutos recalled. “Then we went through the connected garage that led to the residence half of the building. We worked on our homework or played in the backyard, and around 5:30 or so, Mom would use the intercom system to let us know how much longer before she could come over to start dinner.”

Dr. Goutos was past president of the Schenectady County Dental Association. He was a member of the Fourth District Dental Society, the New York State Dental Society, and the American Dental Society.

Dr. and Mrs. Goutos were active members of the reunion committee for the former Mont Pleasant High School for many years. He was also a member of the Siena College Alumni Association and the Georgetown University Alumni Association.

“Chris played several sports in high school, but the sport he was most passionate about was basketball.  He received a basketball scholarship to attend Siena College,” his family wrote. “Chris and Anita were loyal Siena Saints basketball fans, having season tickets for several decades.

“Chris enjoyed playing golf and was one of the founding members of the Pinehaven Country Club in Guilderland.

“After he retired, they sold their home office and built a new home in the Kennewyck development off of Dr. Shaw Road in Guilderland. In his retirement years, he loved to ride his bike throughout the streets of Kennewyck, where he and his wife would continue to reside for over 32 years until his death.”

Greg Goutos recalls, “They loved Kennewyck and they were one of the original residents while it was under construction in the early 1990s. Dad could be seen saying hello to neighbors while riding his bike throughout the interconnecting roads. Because Dad was much older than most of the younger families moving in around them, he was affectionately referred to as the ‘Mayor of Kennewyck.’ My parents loved the neighborhood, and made deep and lasting friendships with their immediate neighbors.”

“Chris will be fondly remembered by his many friends in Bolton Landing,” the tribute said, “where since 1968 he spent his summers with his family at their home on Lake George. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and evening campfires; especially with his grandchildren, who were the joy of his life.”

Greg Goutos recalls, “My parents loved Bolton Landing, and would ride into town nearly every evening just to walk around and get an ice cream cone. Dad would always start the barbecue grill around 5 p.m. My brothers and my sister and I would be running around playing in the nearby woods or down by the dock, but when he rang the dinner bell that was attached to the tree by the grill, we knew it was time to eat.

“I have fond memories of my father reading a book on a lounge chair on the dock, or seeing him dozing off on the hammock that was strung between two trees.”

The tribute concludes, “He will also be remembered by his friends at Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, where he spent his winters in retirement. There he enjoyed playing golf, tennis, bicycling on the many paved trails, and going to the beach. They had many friends they socialized with.  Their condo had one of the largest wrap-around porches in the complex, so they hosted many parties and loved to entertain guests.”
