Helderberg Ambulance had a busy February
The month of February was very busy for Helderberg Ambulance Squad. There were 18 transports including 10 medical, five trauma, and three motor-vehicle incidents. We also had nine calls which were non transports. We had 12 calls in the town of Berne, 14 calls in the town of Knox, and one mutual aid.
On Feb. 27, the squad held its annual banquet at the Colonie Country Club in Voorheesville. Sixty people enjoyed a delicious meal and many memories of the past year were shared.
Sharon Humes received the Emergency Medical Services Person of the Year Award. Sharon is an emergency medical technician, and also serves as a lieutenant where one of her responsibilities is arranging for the monthly drills. In addition to being a lieutenant, Sharon also finds time to compile statistical data required to maintain certification of the squad.
The members of Helderberg Ambulance Squad voted to establish a scholarship to be awarded to a senior graduating from Berne-Knox-Westerlo. In order to receive this scholarship, the graduating senior needs to further his or her education in the medical field. For further information about the scholarship, interested students should contact the guidance counselor at school.
On Feb. 4, Patty Willsey, a resident of East Berne, presented an informative drill to the members about the services available through Albany County Adult Protective Services.
Squad member Dave Tiffany and Vasilios Lefkaditis, Knox Town supervisor, met with Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara, seeking assistance in acquiring a tent to be used as shelter and rehab for firefighters at fire scenes.
We are always looking for volunteers; stop by the ambulance bay on Cole Hill Road the first or second Thursday of each month.
