GCSD to host Recycling Extravaganza

GUILDERLAND — On Saturday, April 29, the Guilderland Central School District is hosting the bi-annual Recycling Extravaganza at Farnsworth Middle School at 6072 State Farm Rd.

The community-wide event will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and is open to both residents and non-residents of the school district. No certificate of residency is required and all items are dropped off at no charge to attendees.

All items will be reused, repurposed, or recycled by: the Guilderland High School Environmental Club, JGS Recycling, County Waste, American Clothing Company, Schenectady Home Furnishings,                      Troy Bike Rescue/Jezreel International, Youth L.I.F.E. Support, 15 Love, or Hannaford Supermarkets.

Examples of what may be brought to the school for recycling on April 29 include:

— Furniture and small household items: beds, mattresses, box springs, and frames of all sizes but no headboards; futons, sofas, love seats, and living room chairs; small area rugs; throw pillows; small kitchen table sets; small dressers and bookshelves, nightstands, end and coffee tables; lamps; toasters, ovens, microwaves, and coffee makers; irons and ironing boards; small mixers; vacuums, mops, and brooms; fans, space heaters, and humidifiers;

— Books: In good condition for donation or in any condition for recycling;

— Metals: Lawn mowers, patio furniture, swing sets, grills, steel I-beams, fences, refrigerators, and more; can be working or non-working;

— Bikes, trikes, or scooters: In working condition or not — all accepted;

— Paper: Phone books, office papers and envelopes, catalogues, magazines, newspapers and boxes. Please note that blueprints, carbon papers, and egg cartons will not be accepted;

— Plastics: Including beverage bottles, plastic bags, and all other plastic items;

— Textiles and clothing: Clothes, shoes, towels, pocketbooks, belts, fabrics, blankets, comforters, and sheets.

— Electronics: No televisions or CRT [cathode ray tube] monitors. All other electronic items are accepted including desktop computers, laptops, servers or server racks, monitors, networking equipment, printers, copiers, and scanners; cell phones, wires, and keyboards; UPSs, battery backups, electronic parts, and audio equipment; toner and ink cartridges; household electronics  like microwaves, VCRs, lamps, and game consoles.

Items that are wet, moldy, malodorous, toxic, or dangerous in any manner cannot be accepted. Carpeting, area rugs, tires, and garbage are not accepted and will also be rejected.

The collection site for the Recycling Extravaganza will be located in the front parking lot of Farnsworth Middle School.
