BETHLEHEM — Nicholas Suhr, a Delmar resident, was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the New York Army National Guard, during a ceremony at New York National Guard headquarters on Friday, March 26.

Suhr, who is a 2002 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and a veteran of the Iraq War, currently serves as the deputy personnel officer for the New York Army National Guard.

He is a full-time National Guard officer.

“It’s a great day in the New York National Guard when we get to promote one of our best and brightest,” said Lt. Col. Mark Frank, the director of personnel for the New York Army National Guard, at the ceremony, as reported in a release from the National Guard.

In his remarks, Suhr said that his success as an Army officer had been shaped by the many people he worked with during his career.

“To everyone I served with, know that I value our experiences together and they make me a better officer,” Suhr said.

Suhr was commissioned in the Field Artillery and was assigned to the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii from 2002 to 2007. He served as a battery fire direction officer, battery executive officer, company fire support officer and battalion maintenance officer.

He deployed to Iraq from January 2004 to February 2005 while assigned to the 25th Infantry Division.

Suhr joined the New York Army National Guard in 2007 as the plans officer, company commander and deputy personnel officer for the 42nd Infantry Division in Troy, New York until 2011 when he was assigned to the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, which is based in Syracuse.

He served in the New York Army National Guard’s Recruiting and Retention Battalion from 2015 to 2017.

He has been assigned to the Military Personnel Office since 2017 in a number of positions.

He is a graduate of the Army’s Command and General Staff College, the Defense Strategy Course, and the Human Resources Management Qualification Course.

Suhr holds a bachelor of science degree in economics from West Point and a master’s degree in industrial and management engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
