Guilderland Girl Scouts pose with a 1944 photograph of President Franklin D. Roosevelt meeting with a Girl Scout Troop 80 years ago. Evelyn Dooley is in back; in front, from left, are Rylee Honsinger, Reagan McLean, Stella Roberts, Anna Russell, Zeda Johnson, and Josie Bermann.

Seven Girl Scouts from Guilderland’s Troop 1760 trekked to the nation’s capital where they toured the White House; spoke with Congressman Paul Tonko; and observed the House of Representatives and the Senate in session where they saw both their congressman, Tonko, and senator, Chuck Schumer, cast votes.

“Congressman Tonko shared stories of his own journey in public service, inspiring the troop to dream big and make a difference,” said a release from the troop.

The troop partnered with the Center for Internet Security to learn about online security, privacy, responsible app usage, and the importance of women in technology. Troop members explored popular smartphone apps, learning about safety features, privacy settings, best practices for managing app permissions, and avoiding harmful content.

The trip concluded with the girls helping Martha’s Table, a not-for-profit organization addressing food insecurity and poverty in the D.C. community.  The troop made over 140 meals for McKenna’s Wagon, a meal van that provides nutritious meals.

Troop 1760, led by Jill Dooley, Megan Johnson, and Brandi Bermann, comprises nine Scouts from four of Guilderland’s five elementary schools.

“These young women are working on their Bronze Award, demonstrating their commitment to community service and leadership,” said a release from the troop. “Their journey to Washington, D.C., was made possible through fundraising efforts, community support, and their unwavering determination.”
