Learn about Altamont StoryMap and REV250 celebrations

To the Editor:

The Guilderland Historical Society will be holding its March meeting on Thursday, March  20,  at the Helderberg  Room of the  Guilderland Public Library. Please note that the usual time has changed.

The business meeting will  begin at 2:30 p.m. At 3 p.m., there will be a presentation by Dave Bourque.

Mr. Bourque will be speaking on the Altamont StoryMap, highlighting the village’s history, public parks, cemeteries, and attractions. Mr. Bourque will be emphasizing the ability to access this information online. Mr. Bourque is the president of  Historic Altamont. Inc.

Following Mr. Bourque’s presentation, Albany County REV250 Commissioners Mr. Mark Jones and Mr. Jeff Perlee, the committee’s chairman, both of Guilderland, will discuss the state and county efforts to bring the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution to us.

From the Albany Plan of Union in 1754, through the vital efforts of local patriots to turn back General John Burgoyne’s invasion during the anxious summer of 1777, to the bitter neighbor vs. neighbor terror that marked the war, Albany County residents  sacrificed, suffered, and contributed as much as any of the 13 colonies.

Yet the county’s contribution is often overlooked. Commissioners Jones and Perlee will give us guidance as to how we, as interested citizens, can help.

Lastly Don Rittner, the co-chair of the Guilderland REV250 committee, will provide an update on that committee’s efforts and how the public can participate.

Please do plan to join us.

John Haluska

Vice President

Guilderland Historical Society
