Community Care Days are May 4 and 5

To the Editor:

Community Cares Days will be held the weekend of May 4 and 5, 2019. The weekend will feature Green Clean activities and Neighbors Helping Neighbors projects throughout the village of Voorheesville and the entire town of New Scotland.

This weekend of caring for our community is a collaboration between the New Scotland Kiwanis, the village of Voorheesville, and the town of New Scotland. The event is organized by a small committee of dedicated community members.

Last year’s Community Cares Days featured numerous recycling stations; Vly Creek, park, and roadside clean-ups; and over a dozen projects to help our senior and disabled neighbors.

Volunteers will be needed to make the event a success. You, your family, business, school group, or community group will have the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of pre-arranged service projects or can work with our committee to initiate your own project.

The deadline for project suggestions is April 19. Volunteers can sign up for one or both of the weekend days by emailing communitycaresdays@gmail.com.

The events take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday and Sunday with a barbecue for all weekend volunteers to be held from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday at the town hall.

Our committee is working with Deborah Engel, the senior outreach liaison at the town of New Scotland, to identify our neighbors in need. Please contact her at 518-439-9038 or me, Janna Shillinglaw, at 518-369-0093 to request or suggest a project.

Green Clean-related activities will be coordinated on an ongoing basis. Please contact Karen Finnessey at or by calling the village hall at 518-765-2692.

Updates will also be posted via the village of Voorheesville and New Scotland Kiwanis Facebook pages. We look forward to a successful Community Cares Days weekend.
