Eye-opening Knox tour made me angry
To the Editor:
This is in response to Ed Ackroyd’s letter to the editor last week regarding the town of Knox facilities tour. As one of the only two people from the general public who attended the walk-through tour, I can attest that Mr. Ackroyd’s description is accurate.
I am grateful that Vas Lefkaditis scheduled this tour, as it was an eye-opening experience — what I saw was disappointing and made me angry after taking it all in. The facility neglect ranged from cosmetic to structural, including unhealthy working conditions for our highway department employees. It is disappointing that the town administration let the conditions deteriorate to this degree.
When asked how many walk-through tours had been done in the past, the response was “none.” The neglect and lack of preventive maintenance appears to have created a situation where there is now a huge snowball of issues which will, no doubt, come with a big cost to rectify.
Nobody wants taxes to increase. We elect the town officers to be good stewards of our tax money. We elect them to make careful decisions and to plan and care for our town for today, and for the future.
This tour was enlightening. I am hoping Vas will schedule another one and that more members of our community will come out to see the current state of the town structures and facilities and to engage in discussions about where to go from here.
At this point, our only option is to look forward and learn from the past.
