Knox Nursery School February fun included groundhogs and valentines

Giving a hoot: Kids at the Knox Nursery School made owls and, in a trip to the Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center, learned about owls.

KNOX — Another month is under the proverbial belt.  It seems that our shortest month is always the busiest!  Even with an extra day this year, we seemed to run out of time.
February, at the Knox Nursery School means groundhogs, presidents, valentines, winter things, and vacation. This year it also included a field trip to the Emma Treadwell Thacher Nature Center.
Although 3- and 4-year-olds are not very familiar with groundhogs, they had fun reading books about this little creature.  We also talked about shadows and how to get one!  Most everyone thought (or hoped, mostly the kids) that winter would continue for at least six more weeks.
The class days leading up to winter break were filled with activities and projects related to Presidents’ Day and Valentine’s Day.  The 4-year-olds were surprisingly knowledgeable about which presidents are on not only coins but also paper money.  Pink, red, and purple hearts overflowed on the tables as each class completed valentine “mailboxes” and made cards for mom and dad.
The visit to the nature center to participate in a program about owls was a hit. There was so much to see and explore and for several of the kids (and parents), it was their first time at the center, but hopefully not their last.  We are very fortunate to have this facility, in our neighborhood, to provide so many wonderful programs for children.
We wrapped up the month with snowy owls, shapes and colors, the letter Q, and paper snowflakes.  On to March — and spring!
