ALTERATIONS MADE
AT ST. LUCY’S CHURCH
The work of remodeling the interior of St. Lucy’s church on Grand street, Altamont, has been completed, and henceforth the edifice will be used the year around for divine service. This church was built in 1883 by Mrs. Lucy R. Cassidy, and was for many years used only during the summer months. Four or five years ago, a permanent pastor was appointed; and one of the vestry rooms was converted into a winter chapel. The church was at that time incapable of being properly heated. The congregation, however, has outgrown the chapel, making the present changes imperative.
The improvements have been extensive, and have greatly beautified the church. The work has been accomplished exclusively by Altamont workmen, and their achievement is a proof that Altamont can do things, and do them well.
The roof of the church now rests on six large columns in place of the inadequate support as originally constructed and the open rafters formerly in view are covered with a fine steel ceiling which now arches the sanctuary.
A BIRTHDAY SURPRISE
TENDERED MR. WOOD
Charles Wood will remember with pleasure his sixty-first birthday, Feb. 28th. Very early in the morning the stork tendered him a gift in the form of a brand new grandson, and in the evening a merry company of his friends and neighbors came to extend their greetings and good wishes. Mr. Wood bore up well under the surprise and heartily welcomed his unexpected guests. More than once or twice during the hours that followed his voice rang out in some witty remark that entertained his guests.
