Vote for a bike-rental station at VPL

To the Editor:

I’m writing to encourage everyone in Voorheesville and New Scotland to lend his or her vote to help us get a new “CDPHP Cycles!” bicycle rental station set up at the Voorheesville Public Library near where the Albany County Rail Trail starts.

Until Friday, March 9, anyone can vote by registering at the http://bit.ly/2t0exU3 web page, and placing a virtual pin at the library’s location where the railroad can be seen crossing School Road. Somehow the map-makers missed Prospect Street. Registration is free. I signed up in about 30 seconds using my email address as a username.

The library makes a great location because it’s adjacent to a CDTA [Capital District Transportation Authority] bus stop and it is so close to the start of the rail trail. Now it has a bicycle maintenance station, and bikers already know to go to there for air or repairs.

It’s open weekends with people there during regular hours, and it has restrooms and water fountains. (There’s coffee too!) Last but not least, it makes great sense to build on the popularity of bicycling around New Scotland and I like the idea that someone could check out a book to follow up on something they thought of while out biking.

CDPHP Cycles! is a commercial operation based on rental income (plans start at $5 per hour), so this vote won’t impact any local taxes or fees. In 2018, they say they are adding 160 bicycles and 20 new rental station locations.

Let’s make the Voorheesville location one of them.
