Village is moving forward on a short-sighted decision with potentially large impacts

To the Editor:

I would like to express dismay with information that is now becoming available concerning the proposed 120-foot cell tower project (based on the Feb. 25 planning board meeting):

— The Altamont Village Board of Trustees originally approved a contract based upon a clear misrepresentation by the developer, namely an understanding that the height of the proposed cell tower would be 100 feet. Notably and significantly, that is about the height of the crown of the trees;

— In the future, the village and property taxpayers could be liable for large lawsuits should the coming 5G technology prove to have adverse health impacts; and

— Informed decision-making should be based on a transparent risk-benefit assessment. The significant visual, health, property value, and taxpayer risks, as noted, are clear, though some are uncertain. But no information has been made publicly available on the revenue benefits (lease payments to the village). Why are village residents/taxpayers withheld this information?

It would appear that the village is moving forward on a very short-sighted decision with potentially large resident health and taxpayer impacts based upon a blatant misrepresentation by the developer.

Recent major development proposals, including the cell-tower project, underscore an urgent need for improved community outreach by village officials.

I am heartened that village trustee candidates Simon Litten and James Sullivan have initiated a Mailchimp email Outreach program to address this issue with board agendas, minutes, and items of special interest sent directly to residents who sign up.
