BPD says: Two shoplifters crash as they flee police

BETHLEHEM — Two men who targeted Hannaford Supermarkets to shoplift crashed their car in Rensselaer after police chased them from a Hannaford in Delmar, according to a release from Bethlehem Police.

Robert D. Shutter, 39, of Albany, and Michael J. Hoban, 66, of West Sand Lake were each charged with petit larceny and conspiracy — both misdemeanors.

Additionally, Hoban was charged with unlawfully fleeing a police officer, also a misdemeanor, and numerous Vehicle and Traffic Law violations.

The release says that events unfolded this way:

On Feb. 21, at about 8 p.m., Bethlehem Police were investigating “numerous thefts” at the Hannaford at 180 Delaware Ave. in Delmar when they saw a man leave the produce section of the store without paying for the produce.

He got into a car that was already running and, when one of the detectives approached the car, it left the parking lot.

“The detective activated emergency lights and siren in an attempt to stop the vehicle and the vehicle fled,” the release said. “The vehicle continued to flee until it crashed in the City of Rensselaer where the suspects were arrested by members of the Town of Bethlehem and City of Rensselaer Police Departments.”

The suspects targeted Hannaford Supermarkets and have committed several larcenies at the Delmar location, the release said.

Shutter was turned over to Albany Police due to an active warrant. New York State Parole was contacted regarding Hoban due to his current parole status.

Both suspects are scheduled to return to Bethlehem Town Court on March 7 at 5 p.m.
