Terez (Thérèse) Mercurio Limer

Terez (Thérèse) Mercurio Limer died on Monday, Feb. 20, 2023, after a two-year battle with lung cancer. She was just a few days away from celebrating her 75th birthday.

“Born in Philadelphia on Feb. 25, 1948, Terez was the second of five children,” her daughter, Kira, wrote in a tribute. “She spent her childhood on eastern Long Island, where she developed a lifelong love of nature exploring the beaches and salt marshes. She attended SUNY Albany, earning a degree in English, and afterwards volunteered with Americorps VISTA in southern Florida.

“It was back in Albany that she met her husband, Will, with whom she would enjoy 47 years of loving marriage. The two were soulmates and best friends, just as in love in their 70s as in their first years together. Terez and Will had two children, Kira Joy Limer, born in 1983, and Britton Davis Limer, born in 1986.

“Terez was a talented and creative person who explored many careers, working as a jazz vocalist, a journalist and newspaper editor, a non-profit administrator, and a community volunteer. As a journalist, she wrote for many local publications including The Altamont Enterprise, the Windham Journal, the Greenville Press, and the Catskill Daily Mail.

“She later worked for the Greene County Council on the Arts and the Literacy Connection of the Hudson Valley. In addition, she served as a trustee of the Greene County Historical Society and volunteered with the New Baltimore Conservancy and the Greene Land Trust. She coordinated the annual Greene County Homes Tour, which opened up historical community homes to the public.

“Her spare time was spent in her beloved gardens and restoring the 1854 farmhouse she and Will bought in 2003.

“Throughout her life, Terez brought love and brightness to all who crossed her path. She was so beloved in her community that she received a get-well card from the EMTs who brought her to the hospital during the final weeks of her life. She will be missed dearly by her husband Will, daughter Kira, grandson Tycho, sisters Joy and Diane, and brother Nick, in addition to many friends and neighbors. We will all work hard to carry her beautiful spirit forward in the world.”
