Winterfest was a lot of fun

To the Editor:

Well, if you didn’t make it to last week’s Winterfest at Switzkill Farm, you sure did miss a lot of fun.  We had just enough snow, temperatures were perfect, and the sun was brilliant.

Scads of kids went zooming through the large culverts set up on the hillside. From the line waiting to slide out into the field, that turned out to be one of the most popular activities of the day. And it wasn’t only the kids who enjoyed the thrill.

Families skated on the cleared pond behind the pheasant barn while others snowshoed or skied on our trails. There were lots crafts for kids to enjoy while warming up inside or next to bonfires strategically placed for the event.

There was cocoa, coffee, and three kinds of chili with chips for all those attending. It was a great day. Even the workers had a good time.

The Washed Out Radio Patrol Club gave a demonstration of their remote-control vehicles on the pond.

Kelly Martin, our local wildlife rehabilitator, was there with owls, kestrels, a woodchuck, a white weasel, and other critters that she had rehabilitated after accidents and other mishaps. Kelly was surrounded by curious attendees as she answered questions and talked about her mission.

But if you missed it all, don’t fret. The Switzkill Farm Board is already planning next year’s Winterfest. If you are into vicarious fun, just visit our Facebook page for pictures and videos of Saturday’s events. Plan to come next year.

The farm is open daily for hiking, snowshoeing, skiing or skating.
