Helene Marcia Freiberg

DELMAR — Helene Marcia (née Markowitz) Freiberg, who was passionate about her work in women’s health, died on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2025 after a brief battle with breast cancer.

She was born on May 12, 1947 to Sadie (née Leder) Markowitz and Sydell Markowitz in Brooklyn, New York.

“After Helene graduated from Herricks High School in 1965, her family wrote in a tribute, “she went on to study education at C.W. Post College. She worked in promotions for Merrill Lynch before finding her passion in women’s health working as a medical assistant in ObGyn offices for many years.

“She concluded her career working as a telemetry technician at Long Island Jewish Medical Center where she developed many meaningful relationships both professionally and personally. She retired in 2011 after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, which she was able to fight into remission, though its effects slowed her down in her later years.

“In 1971, Helene met Stephen Joseph Freiberg. Together they went on to have one son, Scott Tyler Freiberg, and enjoyed 53 years of marriage. Always the yenta, Helene enjoyed long talks over a quadruple espresso with her friends, and spending time with her family. She always had an inappropriate joke to pick you up on a rainy day.”

Helene Marcia Freiberg is survived by her husband, Stephen; her son, Scott, and his wife, Laura; and her two granddaughters, Farrah and Bianca Freiberg.

Memorial contributions may be made to Susan G. Komen, “an organization that Helene felt strongly about,”her family wrote.
