Learn about Guilderland’s most important road

To the Editor:

In 2023, the Guilderland Historical Society was involved in placing three historical markers around our town.

One of these was the Great Western Turnpike marker at Hawthorne Gardens. This was the site of Tollgate #2 as well as the original historic marker.

On Feb. 15, at 7:30 p.m. at the Mynderse-Frederick House in Guilderland Center, the Guilderland Historical Society will be presenting a program on the Great Western Turnpike.

The importance of this road can not be underestimated regarding the history of Guilderland and beyond.

We tend to take Route 20 (as the Great Western Turnpike is now known) for granted but it wasn’t always so.

Please come and learn about this remarkable thoroughfare and the businesses that it brought about.
