Joel Peter Landauer

GALLUPVILLE — Joel Peter Landauer, a mechanic, technician, and councilman who enjoyed riding all-terrain vehicles and motorcycles, died on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Ellis Hospital. He was 60.

Mr. Landauer was born to Anthony Joseph Landauer and Shirley Elaine Landauer, née Schanz, on March 21, 1955, in Schenectady.

He graduated from Berne-Knox-Westerlo High School in 1973. He then enlisted in the United States Army, and served his country from 1973 to 1976. 

Mr. Landauer was a diesel mechanic and engineer deployed to Germany.  He returned to the United States and settled in Schoharie County.

He married Bonnie Snyder on Dec. 24, 2004.

Mr. Landauer worked for Buhrmaster Oil Co. in Scotia as a furnace technician and oil deliveryman. He later worked for Philips Hardware in Altamont for 11 years, and, most recently, he worked at Schoharie Hardware. 

Mr. Landauer was a member of the now disbanded Plank Roaders Association; a volunteer with Gallupville Fire Department; a member of the town of Wright Democratic Committee; and a councilman for two terms in the town of Wright. 

In his spare time, Mr. Landauer enjoyed four-wheeling, boating on Sacandaga Lake and Thomson’s Lake, and riding motorcycles.

Mr. Landauer is survived by his wife, Bonnie Landauer; his daughter, Amber Thomas and her husband, Mark, of West Chester, Pennsylvania; his son, Austen Landauer, of Canajoharie; his grandchildren, Ryan and Emily Thomas; his siblings, Judi Stinson and her husband, Doug, of Hornando, Florida, Jeff Landauer of Knox, Jackie Hallock and her husband, Clyde, of Lecanto, Florida, and James Landauer and his wife, Laura, of Wright; several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles. 

His parents died before him, as did his brothers, Thomas and John, and his nephew, Jason Landauer.

Calling hours will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 13, at the Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main St., Schoharie. A funeral service will follow immediately at noon. Burial will be in the Gallupville Rural Cemetery.
