Old Stone Fort offers genealogy workshops

SCHOHARIE — Genealogy research has become one of the most popular pastimes in the United States, with growing resources and technology opening up new ways for individuals to uncover the histories of their ancestors. An upcoming Genealogy Workshop Series at the Old Stone Fort Museum will help new and experienced researchers learn to use those resources and teach them ways to organize and preserve documents and historic materials at home.

The Genealogy Workshop Series will begin on Valentine’s Day, Thursday, Feb. 14, at 7 p.m. with “Love and Marriage,” which will focus on tracking couples and families using clerical and civil records of marriages, marriage licenses, marriage bonds, and more.

The workshops will be led by Boston University Certified Genealogist Cathy Adams and Schoharie County Historical Society Trustee Bonnie Dailey, a retired attorney who has been doing genealogy for more than 30 years.

Future workshops in the four-part series will be held on March 14, April 11, and May 9. These workshops will allow participants to take a closer look at the resources, tools, and strategies used in successful genealogical research. Participants are welcome to attend one or all of the workshops in the series.

The cost is $5 per workshop and free for Schoharie County Historical Society members.

Those who attend or pre-pay for all four workshops in the series will be able to sign up for a special fifth workshop scheduled for Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Schoharie Free Library. This special fifth installment will allow participants to bring their own family research for a one-on-one session with one of our genealogists. Space for this special workshop is extremely limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pre-registration for each workshop is encouraged and may be made by contacting Old Stone Fort Educational Outreach Director Melinda McTaggart at 518-295-7192 or by email at .

All workshops, aside from the one on June 8 at the Schoharie Free Library, will take place at 7 p.m. in the Badgley Museum Annex at the Old Stone Fort Museum Complex, at 145 Fort Road in the village of Schoharie.
