Knox Nursery School kids learn about colors, winter, and Martin Luther King

Everyone was excited to get back into the school routine after the holiday break. That included the kids, teachers, and most likely the parents too. Although January appears to be a long month with four full weeks of school, it was somewhat shortened this year.

In addition to the New Year and Martin Luther King Jr holidays, Old Man Winter gave the school two-and-a-half snow days.  No worries though as our flexible schedule accommodates unplanned closings.

Typical January activities kept the 3- and 4-year-olds very busy.  “How to Dress for Winter” included books about the proper clothing to wear outside.  The kids were reminded that warm coats, snow pants, boots, hats, and mittens are must have clothes for fun outside play.

Introducing Martin Luther King Jr. to the 3- and 4-year-olds was accomplished by reading books and sharing pictures of this great man. We talked about his good deeds and his dream for all people.  Coloring birthday cakes and writing down our own dreams completed our activities.

Projects and stories about snowmen, polar and hibernating bears are standard for January, but always fun and different from year to year. We are officially halfway thru the alphabet, ending the month with letter “N is for Night.”

Our Terrific Twos group has been quite busy this month with colors. Each week, they focused on a different one.  The color of the week is the main theme for their activities.  They sing color songs, play games, and color sort various objects. They each have a book in which they color using crayons and bingo dabbers and glue in various craft items (feathers, yarn, buttons, and stickers) all in the theme color.

To add to the fun (and learning), the 2-year-olds search the classroom for items that represent the color they are working on. The kids are also encouraged to dress in the color of the week, if possible.  Red, blue and green are the colors the 2-year-olds had fun with this month.

We welcomed two new children to the school this month. Our enrollment now stands at eleven 3-year-olds and eight 4-year-olds.  The 2-year-olds are at their maximum number of ten.
