Local schools and not-for-profits get grants from county
ALBANY COUNTY — Thirty not-for-profit organizations and school districts were presented with a total of over $725,000 in grants from the Albany County Legislature on Friday.
The grants are to be used to meet needs outlined by the county’s Eviction Protection Intervention Collaborative; the Community Development Fund; and the Albany County Improvement Initiative, which requires specific emphasis on women’s health initiatives, tobacco and substance abuse, and anti-bullying programs.
Three local school districts received grants: Berne-Knox-Westerlo, Guilderland, and Voorheesville. Guilderland will use its $13,000 grant to reduce students’ vaping and smoking.
Community Caregivers, which is based in Guilderland and helps elderly residents stay in their homes by harnessing the talents of volunteers, received $12,500.
The Delmar Rotary Foundation, based in Bethlehem, received $15,000.
“We are proud to support organizations and schools that are providing such an important array of services to our residents, including help for vulnerable seniors and impressionable youth,” said Joanne Cunningham, who chairs the county legislature, in a release announcing the recipients.
“Each one of these grant awardees is doing difficult work often far from the spotlight,” she said. “While we will continue to work with our colleagues in government, it is important to reach out into the community and support those who are supporting others.”
