Join the fun, grow a beard: Knox Bicentennial

“Brothers of the Brush”: In 1972, when Knox celebrated its sesquicentennial, these men were winners in a beard-growing competition.

To the Editor:

The town of Knox is celebrating our 200th anniversary this year. Festivities will kick off with a Proclamation Ceremony on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. at the town hall.

Events, activities and contests are scheduled throughout the year to highlight this important milestone and reflect on our long history. One of them will be a beard contest. Facial hair styles have changed a great deal in the past 200 years.

I am challenging Knox residents to stop shaving, decide what style you want to cultivate (they are all fair game), and join the fun! Contest categories will be: Moustache, Partial Beard, and Full Beard. Prizes will go to the longest, most stylish, most creative, and most clean-cut in each category. A special prize will go to the oldest man with a beard.

Winners will be announced on Aug. 6 at the town park, when we’ll also have an antique car show, games, live music, and fireworks.
