Geoffrey Stein, left, and Brad L. Utter pose with a Yankee Boss motorcycle. On Feb. 2, they will discuss the motorcycle industry in New York state in a New Scotland Historical Association program.

To the Editor:

The history of the motorcycle industry in New York state is a fascinating one.

In 2001, after many years of research, Geoffrey Stein, New York State Museum curator (now emeritus) wrote “The Motorcycle Industry in New York State: A Concise Encyclopedia of Inventors, Builders, and Manufacturers.”

In 2023, the second edition of this book was published, revised and updated by New York State Museum Senior Historian and Curator Brad L. Utter.

Together, Stein and Utter will discuss the history of the motorcycle industry in New York State and highlight some of their favorite stories from the book, including one about Voorheesville’s Terence “T” Musto, owner of Fabbro Industries, who has multiple new patents for his inventions relating to bicycle and motorcycle frames.

For a richly informative afternoon, covering the time in the 1890s when any wheeled vehicle with a motor was called “an automobile” to the innovative designs of motorcycles today and their New York state connections, please join us at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 2, at the Wyman Osterhout Community Center in New Salem at 7 The Old New Salem Road.

Admission is always free.

The New Scotland Historical Association Museum will be open for a half-hour before the program.
