Robert S. Andrews
VOORHEESVILLE — Robert S. Andrews, a mild-mannered gentleman who loved to sing and play the piano, died on Jan. 9, 2017. He was 92.
“He was very kind, a gentleman,” said his wife, Marilyn Andrews.
Mr. Andrews was born on April 30, 1924, to Guy C.D. Andrews and Anice Stiles Andrews in Barre, Vermont, where he grew up. He graduated from Spaulding High School in 1942, and then moved to his grandfather’s farm in Moira, New York, to attend the State University of New York at Canton, graduating in 1949.
While teaching an agricultural course in Glenfield, he met Dorothy H. Tiffany. They were married on Oct. 14, 1950, and raised two children together. She died in 1986.
Work brought Mr. Andrews to Voorheesville, where he met Marilyn Minkler. They were married on Nov. 20, 1987.
Mrs. Andrews said the two of them often enjoyed camping together in places like the Adirondacks or Massachusetts. She said her husband’s favorite activity while camping was canoeing, but he liked a number of other activities, too, such as bowling. He also enjoyed pinochle, dominoes, and horseshoes, and actively followed baseball and football teams.
Mr. Andrews worked in many jobs, and often was a driver. He was a fuel deliverer for Agway, a driver for Jewel Tea home delivery service and U-Haul, a school bus driver for the Voorheesville Central School District, and drove a van for the Atria Senior Living Community.
Mr. Andrews was also the owner-operator of Bob’s Service Center, now the Mobile gas station, on the corner of Maple Avenue and Altamont-Voorheesville Road, from 1971 to 1985.
Mr. Andrews grew up with a love of music. His father was a musician, and he received piano lessons as a child, eventually playing and singing in church choirs. He played piano in a dance band in college, and sang at many weddings.
Mr. Andrews was member of the Voorheesville First United Methodist Church choir since 1956, where he often was a baritone soloist, and also sang in the ecumenical choir, the Festival of Praise.
His wife said he was very active in the church. He was a member of the United Methodist Men, various committees, and worked to raise funds for the church.
A loveable man with whom she shared almost 30 years, Mrs. Andrews said her husband was always concerned for the well-being of others.
